Background

This project was part of an educational science series designed for elementary and middle school students. The client, a renowned science network, produces a diverse range of content, including TV shows, magazines, and web materials.

The Challenge

Over the years, the client developed hundreds of interactive science games, each created at different times and by various teams. As a result, the games lacked a consistent visual style and user experience. The outdated designs no longer resonated with today's tech-savvy students, and inconsistencies in navigation, interface elements, and overall aesthetics created confusion and reduced engagement. A unified, modern solution was needed to align with current design trends and educational standards.

The Goal

The objective was to establish a cohesive, modern visual identity for all games while enhancing the user experience. The focus was on creating a student-friendly interface with engaging interactions and animations to boost learning and enjoyment.

The Strategy

We defined success rate based on:

  • Engagement: Achieve a 75% completion rate during moderated usability testing, ensuring that the new navigation and "no-pressure" interface allow students to finish simulations without confusion or drop-off.

  • Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate conceptual understanding by having 80% of test participants correctly explain the scientific concept after the simulation, measured via post-session qualitative interviews.

  • Accessibility & Inclusion: Achieve 100% compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, verified by an internal design audit, ensuring the product is usable for all students regardless of motor or visual ability.

  • Design Velocity: Create a scalable Design System that reduces UI component creation time by 30%, enabling the team to ship new labs faster than the legacy process.

KPI’s:

  • Accessibility Compliance Rate (WCAG 2.1) 100%

  • Average Completion Rate: 75% or higher

  • Feature Discovery (interaction): desired outcome: >3 variables tested per session

  • Time on Task: 45 seconds per variable

  • First-Attempt Accuracy (quizzes): 50% or higher

  • Self-Correction Rate (quizzes): <15 seconds

Water Power - Game

This game explains how hydroelectric plants generate energy to power an entire town. It demonstrates the relationship between water flow and energy production, showcasing how varying water levels impact electricity output.

UI Kit

Sound all around - Game

This lab introduces younger students to the concept of sound waves. Through interactive activities, kids will explore how objects like musical instruments create vibrations that produce sound, helping them understand the science behind everyday noises in a fun and engaging way.
